Bleeding Elbow Wins Olympic PEARLS

Stop frowning! come, let us brew with bones

Bleeding Elbow Wins Olympic PEARLS

Let them flex their elbows immediately

From plaster to cross-joint Steinmann pins to hinged ex-fix, we have tried out everything, but the terrible triad of elbow still seems terrible. Duh! Not only for the patients but also for surgeons. We relocate, but some always tend to dislocate.

We then fail in maintaining a balance of mobilization vs protection. If such balance is an art, not all of us are Picassos at it.

Skeletal dynamics have innovated a joint stabilization system to make our lives easier. They seem to be inspired by the steam-punk designs and pulled one out of their hats. Behold the IJS-E - Internal Joint Stabiliser of the Elbow. This ‘Internal’ hinged exfix protects the repair and allows immediate ROM of the joint.

It is promising. Check out the results of this multicentre trial. After all, any Frankenstein fan would want this in their elbow.

Let them flex their elbows immediately….

‘Cometh the Olympics, Cometh the man’

We have amongst us the world’s best speed skater with 15 world records and a track and road cyclist who was the winner of the U.S Professional Cycling Championship inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame.

Ok, guys, we are not speaking about two different Orthopaedicians.

You read it right. We are speaking about Dr. Eric Arthur Heiden of Heiden Orthopedics.

Have a mind to believe in whatever you read in the next few lines.

Heiden was a young skating prodigy. He won 2 junior world championships followed by 7 world championships in skating. He was the Hero of the 1980 Winter Olympics, having been in the third position behind the Soviet Union, and East Germany in the total gold medal tally. He is the only person to date to win four consecutive “Skating Oscars” or the Oscar Mathisen Award. He was inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame. After a sprint in his skating carrier, Heiden took up professional track and road cycling. He was the first U.S Professional Cycling Champion.

He went on to get a medical school degree at Stanford University, did his Orthopaedic residency at the University of California, and did Sports Medicine training in Birmingham, Alabama. He served as the sports physician for US Olympics skating team for 4 consecutive years apart from serving various other teams including those in NBA. He is currently a practicing Knee and Shoulder surgeon at Heiden Orthopedics.

In his honor-clad life, Heiden has been a master of all trades. But what he considers as his life work is his service as Orthopedician.

Many claim “sports medicine” to be their specialty. Does anyone else embody the term like Dr. Heiden does?

Golden (Hour in) TXA injections

Trauma stands tall, next only to AIDS as the common cause of death among 4-45-year olds. Golden hour management principles in trauma are definitely worthier than raw gold. Roberts et al. in the CRASH-2 trial among 20K trauma victims tried to interpret the golden hour for Tranexamic Acid (TXA) administration.

TXA given within 1 hour of trauma reduced the risk of death due to bleeding by 32%. When given between 1-3 hours the risk protection is reduced to 21%. When given beyond 3 hours the risk of death is raised by 44%.

Golden hour in TXA injections = <3 hours

Give it ASAP guys.
